Earlier this month, CropLife International hosted its Festival of Stewardship centered on “unlocking the potential of sustainable agriculture.”

Evelyn Lusenaka, the Director of Stewardship at CropLife AME, was a guest speaker at this year’s Festival. In her panelist presentation, on the topic of ‘enhancing impact’, Evelyn shared insightful perspectives on CropLife AME’s strategy for impactful stewardship, emphasizing the focus on key value chains like coffee, sugar cane, rice, and horticulture. This targeted approach allows us to address specific stewardship issues unique to each value chain, enabling us to measure the impact of their interventions effectively. By working closely with farmers in these areas and implementing stewardship practices, we aim to enhance employment opportunities, increase farmers’ incomes, and improve market access.

Stewardship lies at the heart of CropLife AME’s mission. Through our intentional and structured stewardship efforts, we aspire to unleash the potential of sustainable agriculture in the AME region.

This week, CropLife Africa Middle East Director Public Affairs & Communications, Margaux Rundstadler is attending CropLife Europe’s annual conference in Brussels. The 2 day conference under the banner of “Envisioning Tomorrow’s Agriculture: Building the Toolbox” will focus on sustainable agriculture as we look towards the future. Our primary challenge today is ensuring sustainable food production for a growing population while concurrently mitigating our carbon footprint. In order to ensure farmers have a toolbox that allows them to feed the world’s growing population, innovation is required. We must be at the forefront of innovation! CropLife AME (Africa Middle East) is proud to announce its collaboration with esteemed partners in organizing a groundbreaking workshop titled “Advancing Regulatory Harmonisation and Biopesticides’ Innovation in Africa.” This pivotal event, taking place in the vibrant city of Cape Town, South Africa, brings together industry experts, policymakers, and stakeholders to address the critical need for a harmonised regulatory framework that promotes the adoption of biopesticides across the African continent. For years, the plant science industry has been at the forefront of advocating for Integrated Pest Management (IPM) practices, recognising their vital role in sustainable agriculture. As a key component of IPM, biopesticides offer an eco-friendly and effective solution for pest control. However, the lack of a unified regulatory framework has hindered the widespread availability and use of these innovative products by African farmers. This workshop serves as a catalyst for change, fostering insightful discussions and collaborative efforts to develop a streamlined and harmonised approach to biopesticide regulation in Africa. By facilitating the registration and commercialisation of these products, we aim to empower farmers with access to a wider range of pest management tools, ultimately enhancing agricultural productivity and sustainability across the continent. CropLife AME remains committed to driving positive change in the agricultural landscape of Africa and beyond. From 25 – 28 February 2024, CL AME Director of Stewardship – Evelyn Lusenaka – attended the 11th annual conference of the Consortium of New Sub-Sahara African Medical Schools (CONSAMS) in Windhoek, hosted by University of Namibia

Delegates from 16 countries around the world, including Eswatini, Ethiopia, Kenya, Mozambique, Nigeria, Rwanda, Somalia, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe, gathered to share their experiences, challenges, and successes. The conference agenda was rich and varied, featuring discussions on medical education, one-health initiatives, medical toxicology, and digital innovation in healthcare training. The event also provided a platform for member schools to present their progress and explore collaborative initiatives in medical education and research.

CropLife Africa Middle East together with Bayer US represented by Dr. S. Eliza Lockwood, MD Medical Affairs Lead explored the opportunity to discuss collaborations with the universities in training on management of pesticide poisoning.
