In October, our colleague Ibrahim, WCA Regional Coordinator, participated in a training in Abuja on “Safe Farming, Sustainable Future: Training on Climate-Friendly Crop Protection Practices” hosted by CropLife Nigeria and Extension Africa

The workshop brought together key stakeholders, including NAFDAC, the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture/Input Services (FISS), CLN, She-Farmer, and Extension Africa, and was expertly moderated by Ibrahim, CL AME.

Key challenges discussed:

  • The national extension service is struggling with just ONE agent for about 10,000 farmers (FAO recommends 1 agent for every 250!).
  • Not enough information available for farmers and confusion about federal institutions’ roles.
  • Regular health incidents related to fake products and empty pesticide containers are concerning.

Solutions & way forward:

  • Foster private sector partnerships to boost extension services.
  • Enhance internet platforms and communication through smartphones.
  • Increase public awareness via extension services and the internet to improve container management.
